Valentis/Valen is a term for people who are in committed relationships with fictional characters. This is genuine love and treating said character as a real person & partner.
For many people, this can include self-inserting into your partner's world, but also fantasising about being around them in this one.Valens don't treat their partners as fictional, even though we can acknowledge they are fictional in this universe. Some believe in the multiple/infinite universe theories, others don't. The only requirement for you to use the term Valen is that you take your relationship seriously & treat them as your partner.This does not imply monogamous, and often many people in Valentis Relationships are selfshippers and Yumeshippers on top of Valens. Multi-selfshippers and polyamorous people are more than welcome to use this label.
Every label that exists right now is a little different, even if just in their contexts of where they originated. This difference is mostly up to personal choice about what people use.Valen as a term was made out of a desire for a non-gendered, non-idol-originating term that expresses the nature of our relationships quickly and simply without having to clarify nuance.It is distinct from selfshipping/yumeshipping in that we explicitly view our Valens as our real romantic partners. For many people it is not just "oh I like the idea of us being in a relationship" or a fantasy, they are treated as our real partners, romantic or queer-platonic..It's not that selfshippers/yumeshippers don't take their ships seriously, we just wanted to have a label that specifically has this meaning, as a lot of other labels have an assortment of meanings.
